Song Analysis: SF9’s Breaking Sensation — “Intro:이별 즈음에”

SF9 released Breaking Sensation on April 17th, 2019 as their second mini album, following their first which was Burning Sensation.

Breaking Sensation consists of six songs:

  • Intro: 이별 즈음에
  • Easy Love
  • Watch Out
  • Hide and Seek
  • Fall Down
  • Why

Breaking Sensation’s “Intro” was written by Youngbin, Hwiyoung, Zuho, and Chani—all four placing as rappers within the boyband.

It’s been some time since I’ve personally heard this song, and the upbeat, fierce rhythm coincides with the sharpness of the members’ raps.

The song is one of endurance towards a past pain concerning a young romance. It’s a reminiscence of something that was.

Things aren’t sweet between us, like a fallen persimmon

When persimmons are no longer ripe, fresh, they tend to take on a bitter, acidic taste. If consumed, it will cause the consumer to recoil out in disgust since it’s too astringent for an individual’s taste.

Considering how the relationship between two individuals isn’t “sweet” anymore, there has been a falling out between them. There’s a rift, making them bitter and ill towards one another.

In fact, the following lyrics add onto the sentiment of falling out due to complications with other suitors around, causing a noticeable strain.

back in the day / I couldn’t even sleep at night every day / Breaking all day

“Back in the day” brings an awareness that this is a reminiscence of something that has already happened. This relationship was harming the Individual A since Individual B was busy basking with others. The turmoil was too much to handle, causing Individual A to suffer emotionally as this romance was hardly a loving one.

Are you doing well? / It’s a pointless question

Sometimes a relationship just causes an individual to look back on certain relationships that may have been referred to as “the one.” However, young romances often lead to conflict due to sprouting desires and points of interest.

The falling out of two individuals, the loss of an emotional connection – bond, even – is inevitable at a young age, and it can lead to heartache and pain.

And more often than not, that suffering is often one-sided if Individual B is relishing in others’ attention while Individual A is aching for them.

The more I take out my scar, I’m the only one / who is in pain

“이별 즈음에” means Around Farewell. Taking this into consideration with the content of the song, such as lyrics I pulled and quoted above, it’s an acceptance of how a young love has impacted the recipient after facing a one-sided love. While youth is supposed to easy, it does not make love easy, and it can affect one’s own mental state and self image as being replaced or cheated on can afflict one’s personal image.
